Golden Silvers

The Golden Silvers are a band from London in the UK which has gotten my attention a few weeks ago when I was listening to BBC Radio 1 web radio. They were advertised as one of the leading bands of Radio 1’s Big Weekend that took place this year in Maidstone, Kent, England. So, their very catchy song “Arrows of Eros” was aired several times in the past weeks and I have to say, I fell in love with it. Just the beginning is absolutely wonderful. It starts off with that synthesiser-like three-note theme, that repeats itself over and over again in different variations. And then the singing part takes off: ‘There was a girl who lived in London To-ho-hooown…’ – amazing. What could be a better start for such a typical Britpop song.

Well, I think you should check them out for yourself, which you can either do through their MySpace profile or through their official website. Oh, and by the way, their single “Arrows of Eros” officially comes out on July 14th, 2008. So, pre-order it now at the Young And Lost Club for just £ 3.40 + postage! And no, I’m not getting paid for this.

Now go and enjoy their music, it’s bloody awesome.

JOSH HOMME IS HOMOPHOBIC!!! Not.

with one comment

In the last couple of days, on particular web site has blazingly fast reached the status of becoming my very personal and beloved home page in Safari – Pitchfork. It’s one of those sites where I try to read at least the first paragraph of every single new article. Tonight one specific article caught my attention:

Josh Homme Defends Himself: “Homophobic? I’m in Queens of the Stone Age for Crissake”

The reason why I was interested in that is probably because homophobia is a topic that concerns myself. So I read the first parts and got even more interested into the story (I know, it’s coming, I’m building up to it!). It all goes back to this incident (the important stuff starts at 3:26 min):

Now, after watching this, one would (hopefully) think ‘what a douche bag!’. But now take a look at the open letter that Josh Homme released today:

Member of the Peanut Gallery:

Some journalists & citizens on the internet & are wondering: Q? Am I a homophobe because I included a slang for gay in with other “acceptable” curse words during a verbal lashing I gave a young concertgoer, after being hit by his shoe, during a show the other day? A= Nope. My gay family & friends, as well as myself, KNOW I am not a homophobe. For years now I’ve known gay is not a choice; one’s skin color doesn’t determine one’s intelligence level; & red hair doesn’t mean you’re someone’s stepchild. You see, it’s not the words, it’s their intent. I never said, nor suggested, that being gay is wrong, but apparently, based on your outrage to my flu-infused rant, you do! By that logic… I also told that young whipper snapper I’d have anal sex with him… how can I possibly reconcile these opposing viewpoints? I called him a pussy too. Does it mean I hate our one worlds’ collective vagina? I never have been nor intend to be politically correct. That’s your cross to bear. To me, that PC world would suck more shit than the porta-potty truck at Glastonbury. Homophobic? I’m in Queens of the Stone Age for crissake… You say, “So. Your band name doesn’t prove anything.” Maybe not. But it’s a helluv a lot more definitive than the logic of some watchdog… (sorry canine-American, canine-European, canine-African, canine-Australian & canine-Asian) moralist, keeping score from pure perfectionville? If your glass house is squeegeed that clean & you need to do something, do what the great philosopher Bill Hicks once suggested: – forgive me-. Or don’t. I’m not asking for either, OK? I think you should let both of your cheeks go loose so the stick will drop out. Either way I expect that you’ll soon find another injustice from your chair, then roll to your bullhorn & point it out to the rest of us… Because you’re so above it all. Or If you’ll allow me to translate a wish of mine into your PC lingo:
Will you please go have consensual, sex with yourself.
Pretty please with all natural, carbon offset sugar on top.

Sincerely,
Mr. Missundastood
A.K.A. Joshua, Baby Duck, Jho
Head Choreographer & Do Stuff Corporation’s pansexual spokes-thing

Isn’t that one hell of a response? I consider it being made of awesome.

And now, stay classy San Diego!

This video was originally posted my tumblelog on April 11th, 2008. What you’ll see is a video mash-up of the Star Wars movies supporting the song “Star Wars Disco” by Meco which was a huge success in the 80’s amongst fans of the series. And it rocks!

Girl Talk does the Radiohead

This is big news folks. Girl Talk does the Radiohead!!!

About three months ago, my good friend Jakob told me about Girl Talk, a mash-up artist from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, who only uses his Dell laptop to create the biggest crazy-awesome parties you can imagine. Not only does he really know his thing, he also has an awesome taste of music coming from a very broad variety of genres. And that’s really what you get – a huge mix of musical genres.

Girl Talk, whose original name is Gregg Gillis, until today, had released three albums with “Night Ripper” from 2006 being the one through which I got to know his music. And it blew me away. You can put it in your iTunes and play it from beginning to end and it will never bore you. Because it’s changing all the time.

Now today, Girl Talk released its 4th album called “Feed The Animals”. But it’s kind of an unusual release which at the same time isn’t that unusual these days anymore. Because Gregg and his label Illegal Art use the “Radiohead model” which means in fact that you, the listener, choose what to pay for the album.

If you choose to not paying anything, for whatever reason, you get the full album as a free download including all tracks as DRM-free 320 kbit/s MP3 files and a high-res cover artwork. If you pay $5 or more, you’ll get the whole thing as a CD-quality FLAC download + a one-file seamless mix of the album and finally, paying $10 or more, you’ll get all the stuff mentioned above + a packaged CD as soon as it becomes available.

I chose to pay nothing at first, but only because I have to wait until the money arrives on my (prepaid) credit card, so, no worries.

The new Girl Talk album “Feed The Animals” is one hell of a great album, that’s for sure. Unfortunately, Mr Gillis missed to rick-roll us all. Although he put a sample of Rick Astley’s “Never Gonna Give You Up” into his track “Like This” he didn’t play a single part of the oh-so-important chorus. Too bad.

Anyways, check it out, download it and choose yourself how much you want to pay. Here’s the link:

Please, bands of the world, participate in this new way of independent and listener-friendly distribution. Believe me, it’s so much better than iTunes etc. – and that’s an Apple Fanboy talking here.

Thanks Gregg, you made my evening!

Stage Dive FM

Well, after a kind of longish break I check back in with an announcement: Peter is now hosting his own web radio station! So far, it’s music only, selected by Peter himself and as you know, that’s a guarantee for good quality music. You’ll hear tracks from artists like David Bowie, U2, Radiohead, The Whitest Boy Alive, Feist, The Fratellis, Sondre Lerche, The Futureheads, Tokyo Police Club and many others.

In the nearer future there will also be “real shows” with your host Peter. Unfortunately those shows will be in German, at least that’s the plan, since the hosting site, laut.fm, is German.

Until then, check out the station profile at laut.fm/stagedive or simply put the exact same URL in iTunes or the like and you’ll receive a crystal-clear 128 kbit/s stereo MP3 stream. Isn’t that just great news? Yeah, I know it is. So, fire up your iTunes and start listening to Stage Dive FM TODAY!

Happy listening!
